Challenges for Financial Market Development in Asia"

The FourA marked its launch with an inaugural conference in Singapore from 28 to 30 August 2000. The Conference theme was “Disclosure, Governance & Transparency – Challenges for Financial Market Development in Asia”. The 3-day conference featured keynote speakers with international recognition and standing and who possessed an intimate understanding of key issues affecting financial market developments in Asia. Amongst them was Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Singapore’s Minister for Health and Second Minister for Finance.

The conference received good response from accounting academicians and practitioners with the presentation of 72 scholarly papers. It was attended by some 160 participants from 20 countries.

The conference also provided the opportunity for the FourA to hold its first annual general meeting and the election of office-bearers. Professor Tan Teck Meng, Deputy President of the new Singapore Management University was elected as the first President of the Association. Professor Shahrokh who initiated and spearheaded the setting up of the association was elected Secretary-General.

The meeting also agreed that the next conference will be held in Malaysia’s resort island of Penang.
