"Financial Reporting in the 21st Century"

17 to 19 September 2001

Penang, Malaysia


The Asian Academic Accounting Association (FourA) held its second conference at Shangri-La Hotel, Penang, Malaysia from 17-19 September 2001. The conference theme was “Financial Reporting in the 21st Century”. The 3 day conference featured keynote speakers with international recognition and standing and who possessed an intimate understanding of key issues affecting financial market developments in Asia. Amongst them w ere Dr. Samad Alias, the current president of MIA and MACPA and Datuk Zainal Aznam Yusof, the Deputy Director-General (Economics), ISIS. The conference was officiated by Colonel Dato’ Professor Dr. Ahmad Fawzi Mohd Basri, the Vice Chancellor of UUM.

The conference received good response from accounting academicians and practitioners with the presentation of 67 scholarly papers. It was attended by some 95 participants from 15 countries. The conference would have a better response had the September 11 tragedy did not occur. Twenty participants from the USA and Thailand made last minute cancellation due to this event.

The conference also provided the opportunity for the FourA to hold its second annual general meeting and the election of office-bearers. Associate Professor Dr.Mustafa Mohd Hanefah from the School of Accountancy, Universiti Utara Malaysia was elected as the new President of the Association. Professor Shahrokh who initiated and spearheaded the setting up of the association was reelected Secretary-General. The meeting also agreed that the third FourA conference would be held in Japan’ beautiful city of Nagoya.
